  1. Another weekend gone…

    October 17, 2011 by matt.ezell

And as you may or may not know, this is a subject I am not generally super happy about…
Here I sit, 30 until midnight – acting as if I am a 4yr old fighting sleep.

Unlike a 4yr old fighting sleep, I am not tired.
I just do not want to go quickly nor quietly as my weekend is tore from me.

We were not done enjoying each others company nor ready to relinquish our time.

Under what authority am I being forced to forge ahead into yet another Monday?!

    A travesty, I say!

I still assert that we ought time travel to meet with the man who originally setup the week of 5-and-2 -
So that we may have a very direct conversation about his askew arrangement
and impose our argument to right his horrible, horrible wrong.

    Bah. Hum. Hum and Bah.

  2. A New Home

    September 20, 2011 by matt.ezell

So, this is the first post of mattezell.info in its new home.  I decided to export my posts from my wordpress.com hosted account and post them to my newly, self-hosted WordPress install.

Of course, the next logical step in this process is to post the first post of mattezell.info v2.0 (ok, so perhaps like v12.0, but who can keep count?!).

Check back often… or not.. if history is any indicator, who knows when I will post again ;)

  3. Restarting Vino-Server from CLI

    July 22, 2010 by matt.ezell

As is often the case, I am posting this here just as much for myself as I am for others Googling this problem…

Sometimes Vino-Server on Ubuntu can be flaky, preventing me from logging in, even though it is showing as running. I recently stumbled onto a helpful thread at UbuntuForums that assisted me…

Using the following, you should be able to get Vino back to behaving…

    you@machine-name:~$ export DISPLAY=:0.0
    you@machine-name:~$ /usr/lib/vino/vino-server &

I find this particularly useful when I am able to SSH in, but can’t VNC…

    Hope this helps someone!

  4. Wow. I never use this thing. [Inception]

    July 18, 2010 by matt.ezell

So, I came to post a quick quip about how much I liked Inception today and realized how little I use my blog anymore.  Not that I have ever been a competitive blogger or anything of the sort, but it would seem that I have withered and dried up – at least so far as these posts are concerned (and likely reflect).

None the less, that is not the case (me withering and drying) as I have just been really, really (really) busy reading and trying to get myself up to speed as a professional programmer… Something that I am enjoying emensely (even though it sometimes feels as if I will never ever (ever) know enough to take a breath again – GOOD THING IT’S SUPA FUN!).

Speaking of something I have recently enjoyed (and my reason for sitting down 15 mins ago to begin writing this) – watching Inception (I’ll wait while you see what it is if you don’t know)… Oddly, there is more related between the first part of this post (developing as a developer) and the fun provided by Inception – conceptually at least… I have to say, I was genuinely entertained at the layering and constant thought provoking representations of recursion and Big-O concepts… I won’t go into it much more than that, but if you find this stuff interesting, you will likely enjoy aspects of the movie that may perhaps will be overlooked by “other watchers” of Inception.  Funny thing is, I get back home, head over to browse hacker news and quickly come to the realization that I was not alone in my CS-centric thoughts about the film – http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1526104

Aside from the mentally stimulating representation of CS-Theory-related concepts, there is PLENTY of eye-candy by way of perty explosions and mind-bending (and physically defying) scenery to keep you entertained – even if the exotic applications of recursion aren’t your cup of tea.

    I’d give Inception an ‘A’.

  5. GRUB2 – Link worth mentioning

    May 10, 2010 by matt.ezell

After countless wasted hours, I feel this link is one worth making note of : Grub2 Ubuntu Community Documentation.  The defacto since 9.10, things are a bit different from how things were handled in ‘just Grub’.  After years of learning the ins, outs and peculiarities of Grub, having readily available access to docs on Grub2 is a necessity when tacking installs of the latest and *cough*used loosely*cough* “greatest” distro releases.  After tacking with a mismanaged auto install of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) on my P5n-e SLI based desktop (Raid, SATA+IDE, SLI and the works), I just thing that this link merits special mention…

It was likely some 100 threads before clicking through to this very link, so here it is – preserved for your and my reference!

  6. That time again…

    March 30, 2010 by matt.ezell

As I roll into day 2 of f’Unemployment, my inbox is quickly filling with auto-response emails thanking me for my application. As I am sure will occur in the coming weeks with increasing frequency, I find myself asking “how did I get here?”
I mean, sure, I remember going to school. I remember making the drive up in hopes of finding work in the big city. I remember starting and ending my most recent 2 positions. But how did I get here? How did I get to be an educated, unemployed 29 year old unsure of what I wanted to be when I grow up?
‘Go to a good school and get a good job’ is what they said. What defines a good school and a good job escapes me still today – to be honest, I think this is becoming an increasingly hard thing to define as college has become the equivalent of high school and traditional ‘careers’ become merely jobs.
As I wrestle with finding work and weigh this against incurring additional student loans in pursuit of my Masters, I have to ask – “Is there a better way?” Is there some as-of-yet unknown way that I can market my particular skills and find a rewarding career in the field that I love?
Ok. Enough fruitless life musings – time to try and find some real (paying) work… A career? I don’t know if those exist anymore…

  7. February 28, 1983 – February 22, 2005

    February 22, 2010 by matt.ezell

Looking at these dates as I type them in the subject line….far too short of a life… Especially a life with so much to give to the world.

We still love and miss you very much, Mark.

  8. The Exorbitant Price of Movies Today

    June 23, 2009 by matt.ezell

06/22/2009  RMP LEE BRANCH $12.25 (Coke and Popcorn)
    06/22/2009  RMP LEE BRANCH $19.50 (2 tickets)
    Total: $31.75

Summary: Yes, I paid it – doesn’t mean I think that $32 for a Saturday movie for 2 is exactly reasonable…

  9. Support Alabama HB 373 – Remove Antiquated Alcohol % Beer Restrictions

    May 20, 2009 by matt.ezell

    *HB373*
In case you are unaware, Alabama is currently in the process of attempting to reform its antiquated Alcohol Laws.  The bill has passed the house and now needs Governor Riley’s approval to pass it into law – Governor Riley really needs to know that we Alabamians want this to pass!!!

Current restrictions do NO GOOD in protecting Alabama’s citizens and only serves to restrict YOUR choices through political agenda and special interest arrangements – let the Governor know that your beer of choice is YOUR BEER OF CHOICE (even if it contains 7% alcohol). There is no logic behind the law – as we all know, there are plenty of legal (liquor) drinks well in excess of the 6% restriction placed on beer… So, logically speaking, how can a 6% restriction on BEER really be in the interest of the people?

Obviously, I would never ask you to act based on my word alone, so if you don’t know, get educated – http://alisondb.legislature.state.al.us/acas/searchableinstruments/2009rs/bills/hb373.htm

Here is my message to the Governor – feel free to replace my name with yours and edit where you see fit.

    ————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
    Subject: HB373

    Dear Gov. Bob Riley,
First, thank you for taking the time out of your day to address this issue.  I am writing to express my support of House Bill 373.  I am formally requesting that you, my elected governor, act in the best interest of my beautiful state of Alabama and sign HB373 into law.

Far too long has Alabama followed behind many of the other 49 states of this grand nation in removing antiquated laws and regulations from our books – please do not allow this to CONTINUE to happen in regards to the overly restrictive alcohol laws that have hampered the industry and individual’s rights for nearly all of Alabama’s great history.

Although I understand and appreciate many of Alabama’s conservative traditions and their supporting laws, one’s personal choice to consume a particular beverage should not be governed by the state when the beverage has been approved at the federal level.  Although one can clearly understand the need to regulate safety standards for approved beverages, current law does far more than this in that it prohibits most beverages for arbitrary and political reasons, with out the “for the good of our people” defense to support it (it’s no secret that the Birmingham Budweiser Distribution Company petitioned against previous similar bills to HB373 in the past).

Not only this, but current regulations on Alcohol have no logical backing in that prohibiting alcohol content in beer to <6% serves in NO WAY to protect Alabama’s people and only serve to hinder individual choice and freedom – as you likely well know, we Alabamians can buy beverages containing far in excess of 6% under current Alabama law.

Please, Governor Riley, pass HB373 so that the currently over-reaching laws and restrictions on Alcohol can be lifted so that me and my fellow Alabamians may drink our beverage of choice without the interference of big government.

Thank you very much for you time and attention.
    Alabama Citizen Matthew Ezell

  10. Shat Happens.

    April 23, 2009 by matt.ezell

Ok, so admittedly I am not the biggest Bible buff.  And, yes, I have read the book.  I tend to agree with Einstein on this one – “The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.”

None the less, I was recently (re)exposed to the following Bible verse and found it of particular value…

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
    -Ecclesiastes 9:11

In short, when shit happens, its not because your god is punishing you for your misdeeds (though he does see the dirty things you do with your old glow-worm), but is instead happening because when given a long enough time frame, shit will, in fact, tend to just happen.  So rest assured mortals, god didn’t smite lil Jonny because of his divine will and/or plan… Lil’ Jonny was smote because it was time for shit to happen…
