I have never had an unsecured instance running exposed and when I used this process, I was definitely accessing with a password. Unfortunately, I don't think that I can be much help in your plight as I have not had this issue for quite some time. Have you checked your logs for anything interesting? You will have several options - experimentation often will yield the best results... If it helps, my settings are set to "Analog Stereo Duplex". Check to see if pulseaudio is running too... If not, you can always kick it off by pressing ALT+F2 and entering 'pulseaudio' in the run prompt... Also, ensure that it isn't fully muted... Let me know if this isn't it and I can possibly help you further...
